Why have a neighborhood crime watch ?
![]() | The main reasons for having a neighborhood crime watch is, 1 to keep our neighborhood safer, 2 get to know your neighbors and there routine, 3 look out for one another. The main goal this neighborhood needs to achive is # 2. If we can achive that # 1 and 3 will be automatic. I challenge you to help us reach this goal. Gary Justice |

Dear Crime Prevention Practitioner, McGruff the Crime Dog here, taking this opportunity to say thank you for helping me take a bite out of crime for the last 25 years. Its hard to believe I've been around that long. In my first print ad I said,"You don't know me yet. But you will." Who would have thought that so many people would come to know and trust me? A study in 2000 found that 76 percent of 9- to 11- year-olds and 55 percent of adults recognize me and my "Take a Bite out of Crime slogan"! But I didn't gain this fame on my own. I had a lot of help from people like you. Millions of people recognize my mug and follow my advice on personal safety, children's safety, and getting involved in community crime prevention efforts because of your hard work in spreading my message and my public service advertising through the National Citizens' Crime Prevention Campaign (NCCPC) In 1980, a group of concerned private citizens and public leaders launched the Campaign, with me, McGruff, as their spokedog. I started out telling people about common sense steps they could take to reduce crime-locking doors, leaving lights on, and letting neighbors know when they go on vacation. Later, my message grew to include protecting youth, watching out for neighbors, preventing gun violence, and building a sense of neighborhood by creating communities that don't produce crime. Then I developed special messages for children and youth. I wanted kids and teens to be safe and I wanted them to help me. I taught them how to protect themselves against the dangers of alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. Today I'm teaching kids how to handle bullies, what to do if they find a gun or other weapon, and how to protect themselves when using the Internet. And I encouraging teens to get involved in volunteer activities as a way to help make their communities safer and more secure. We have much to be proud of in 2005 - especially crime's remarkable decline - but we must continue to fight crime and work to strengthen our communities for many generations to come. Thanks again and keep up the good work in helping me "Take a Bite Out Of Crime"! McGruff the Crime Dog |
